A Forgotten Story
Composed on Wednesday December 12, 2001

A man and a woman, both in their 20s meet again after 5 years apart. The two are still living in the same state, but through the years they have drifted apart. A conversation ensues.

Woman: Hi there, I haven't seen you in ages
Man: Well hello, and how are you?
Woman: I'm OK, you know. How are things with you?
Man: I 'm feeling great, my family is fine and I love life.
Woman: Boy have you changed! This doesn't sound like the old you. I was the happy one before, and you the old gloom-and-doom doorstop. So what changed you?
Man: Life itself my good woman. I do and have seen a change in you in the past years, and I don't like it myself. I turned into a success, but what have you become?
Woman: Well you don't have to insult me, and how have you noticed changes in me? We haven't seen each other in 5 years!
Man: Oh I've observed you in the last 5 years, I've even wanted to call or approach you - but didn't.
Woman: Why not?
Man: Because we've both changed, we're at two different spectrums of the ocean and we'll never get together again. You know what, I don't think that we even like each other any more.
Woman: How can you say that? I still like you, and want to talk to you.
Man: But you don't like yourself, do you?
Woman: What are you talking about? Of course I like myself.
Man: I started off as a D student, didn't really like life my family or myself. What changed me? I woke up after spending 3 of those 5 years on the street - homeless, alone, helpless. I passed you many times, but you wouldn't even look at me, or stop to help me. That and other things woke me up quickly. I got up, gained some help and got back on my feet. And what happened to you in those years - you became stubborn, ignorant and drifted from everything. Now you are worse off than I am, so don't tell me that you care about yourself.
Woman: I'm sorry to hear that you've had so many problems, but now you're judging me after all these years. I guess you think highly of yourself? You've made it and now you wish to punish me as I fall down the ladder!
Man: Just think about this - I don't think less of you - I think more of myself. And because I think more of myself, I plan to succeed where others have failed. I will not let you or anyone else bring or keep me down, and nothing will divert my successful journey. That is one one of the reasons why we are so apart - I make and do/ you abuse and destroy. I really don't want you in my life.
Woman: Don't worry about that, Mister HIGH and MIGHTY - I want no parts of you anymore. I don't care what happens to you, and if I knew that was you on the streets - I would've spit on you. Leave me alone and don't ever talk to me again!
Man: That's fine!

The man and woman now walk away from each other, and never speak or meet again.
